Construct, Inc
When one thinks about the Berkshires in Massachusetts they usually picture quaint rural villages, mountains with hiking trails, farmland and skiing, they picture a relaxed lifestyle and many people choose to have vacation homes built within the region.
But there is an underlying problem and that is a lack of affordable family housing. It goes unseen but many families, including those with children have no other choice but to rent houses during the winter month and then spend the spring and summer living in tents at a local campground
Tucked against the side of a mountain this project provides 11 affordable apartment units to families in need.
Instead of being designed like most multifamily projects where all the units are packed into one large building surrounded by a sea of parking, this design was divided into three separate buildings, arranged to capture passive solar on the PV array and have it so that residents need to walk past each other after parking their vehicles. This courtyard design allows the opportunity for interaction and the ability to foster a sense of community within the development.
The residents of the development are thriving and are functioning as a community
