The town of Spencer, MA has a high demand for affordable senior housing. The former Lake Street Elementary School has sat vacant for a long time and is often the target of vandals and criminal activity.
The Women's Institute in Boston, MA purchased the property through a competative RFP process and several design options were explored in re-using and renovating the existing school.
Due to the small size of the classrooms and the numerous elevation changes it became financially benefitial to explore the demolition of the existing school and the design of a new structure that would better serve the needs of the senior residences
A new facility was designed that would include 42 one bedroom units, each including custom, aging-in-place details. New community spaces were included to enhance the social interaction between residents.
