New Hampshire Cabin

New Construction

Gorham, NH

A Massachusetts family wanted to create a getaway in the forest of New Hampshire at the base of the White Mountains to escape from their busy lifestyle.

Their goal was a disconnection from technology and distractions, where the family could reconnect with each other and spend time talking, hiking, playing board games and enjoying time together.

A minimal disturbance approach was taken. Just as a hiker might say, leave only your footprints the small cabin was designed for minimal distrubances to the surrounding forest. The cabin is tucked within the trees and the surrounding area is left in its natural state.

The forest is always changing, the constant growth of the vegetation and the filtering of the sunlight make each moment unique. These moments are captured with the clerestory windows that flood the cabin with natural light and give a view to the treetops, and the wood slats that give a glimpse into the forest at key moments while walking through the cabin.

The client is living a happier and more fullfilled life. When they go up to the cabin they get away from their jobs, school and other obligations. They are able to slow down and forget about the outside world for awhile. The client says, “Watching my children explore the woods, get dirty and use their imagination reminds me of my own childhood.”
